Frequently asked questions

Which tax regime is better, old or new?

It depends on your deductions. With few deductions the new regime almost always wins, thanks to wider slabs, a ₹75,000 standard deduction and the Section 87A rebate that makes ₹12 lakh of taxable income tax-free. Once HRA, 80C, NPS and home-loan interest together run to several lakhs, the old regime can overtake it. CTCPlanner computes both with your actual numbers rather than a rule of thumb.

How is in-hand salary calculated from CTC?

Start with CTC and remove employer-side contributions — employer provident fund, employer NPS and gratuity accrual — to get gross salary. From gross, deduct employee provident fund (12% of basic), professional tax levied by your state, and income tax computed on taxable income after the standard deduction. What remains, divided by twelve, is your monthly in-hand salary.

How much income tax is payable on a ₹20 lakh salary?

On a standard structure under the new regime for FY 2026-27, roughly ₹1.6 lakh a year including cess, giving about ₹1.35–1.45 lakh a month in hand depending on your state and structure. The exact figure depends on your salary components, so compute it rather than relying on an average.

What is the difference between CTC, gross salary and in-hand salary?

CTC is everything your employer spends on you, including contributions you never receive directly. Gross salary is CTC minus those employer-side contributions. In-hand salary is gross minus your provident fund, professional tax and income tax — the amount that actually reaches your bank account.
